Nave News!

Great Northern School

Mrs. Nave, Grades 5-6

In the classroom:  In reading, we continue our study of non-fiction text, narrowing our focus to determine central ideas or arguments and using the actual written information from the text to support our claim.    In math, the 5th grade group began a unit on algebraic equations, having just finished their study of expressions. The 6th grade group is now working on a study of integers and graphing. As writers, the students continue to work on non-narrative pieces (as we called them in class today!) 5th grade students will focus on opinion writing while 6th grade students focus on crafting and writing arguments.

Calendar:  The February calendar was sent home last week.  Please note that we changed our Kindergarten day and Pizza Friday from this Friday to FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13.  This will allow us to include the Kindergarten students in our Valentine Day celebration in the afternoon.

Moving on to Middle School:  Can you believe it?  It’s time to start thinking middle school for 6th grade students!  Great Northern students may attend any public middle/high school, and we help to transport students to Cheney Middle School, Cheney High School, and Medical Lake Middle and High schools for those students living within our district boundaries.  If you are contemplating sending your child to the Cheney School District, Great Northern students are assigned to Cheney Middle School (this was a Cheney SD decision, not one made by GNSD).  Westwood is not an automatic option, and students must “choice in” to that particular school.  Any 5th grade student thinking of attending a Cheney or Medical Lake middle school in the 6th grade will also have to “choice in” (enrollment is not automatic in 6th grade), given that Great Northern provides a 6th grade program.   Middle school registrations typically take place in early August, and I will have information on visiting days etc. in the near future.  Please don’t hesitate to call me or a counselor at your middle school of choice if you have any questions or concerns.

HIV/AIDS and Human Growth and Development Education:  We will begin our annual unit the week of March 9.  We begin with HG&D and then move on to HIV/AIDS.  The HIV/AIDS is a federally mandated program, and anyone wishing to opt their child out of this unit must do so in writing.  I am happy to review curriculum for both programs – just give me a call and we can arrange a time to view materials.

Snack:  Enclosed is a snack calendar for February.  Thanks to everyone for your generosity and willingness bring in snacks.
